Orange County CA Long Distance Moving Checklist

For some moves, you dump everything in random boxes and luggage bags. Long-distance is the opposite. Whether you're moving a few hundred miles or to a new country, you're going to need a long-distance moving checklist to plan a full-proof move.

From the day you decide to move, there are many things that you need to sort out before proceeding. You have a thousand things on your mind, and it gets chaotic. You can't easily run back if you have left something behind.

Your moving process starts from the day you decide to move to the day your belongings are finally delivered to your new home. If you hire professional movers, you won't have to worry about leaving anything behind.

We have prepared a moving checklist that will help you organize your moving process. Nothing falls in between the cracks when you have a list written down. If a move is planned well, it is less chaotic and stressful.

First, prepare yourself for the move. Give yourself enough time to rest between the moving activities. If you are busy with other priorities, hire professional movers to take some burden off your shoulders. Let's start with the checklist.

  1. Items to be Moved
  2. Gather Packing Supplies
  3. Plan your Meals
  4. Disassemble Furniture
  5. Start Packing Items You Won’t Need Until After the Move
  6. Change Your Address
  7. Choose A Moving Company
  8. Inform Family and Friends

Make sure you tick all these points before the moving day.

Items To Be Moved

You will have to make a list of things you want to move, donate or sell. If you have lived in the house for a long time, there might be many things that you no longer use or want. Moving is an opportunity to donate or throw away those items. Start differentiating your items into four categories:

  • To be moved
  • To be donated
  • To be sold
  • To be thrown away

Start this process as early as possible so you do not end up paying to move things you don't need. Then, once you decide the items that need to be moved, keep them aside and start packing the ones you don't need till after you have moved.

Gather Packing Supplies

Many stores have empty boxes lying outside their store. You can use them to pack all your small items. It is advisable to buy good quality, heavy-duty boxes to load furniture and other valuable items. If you plan to hire professional movers, they also provide packing services.

The following is a list of a few packing supplies that you will need:

  1. Boxes
  2. Packing Tape
  3. Plastic Wrap
  4. Bubble Wrap
  5. Plastic Bags
  6. Labels and Markers

Some movers offer their supplies for sale, so if you are hiring movers, then inquire about their services before buying packing supplies.

Plan your Meals

Make a list of the food in your fridge and pantry. Decide which needs to be finished or donated. Plan your meals so that all the food there is as little left as possible by moving day. Check all the expired food so that it can be tossed.

Many people need food, so don't throw away non-perishable food. Instead, you can donate it to a charity nearby. Some moving companies can help you with all the food and deliver it to the needy. You can also gather all the kitchen counter cleansers in one box and label the box.

Disassemble Furniture

Start dissembling your furniture that is not frequently used. You can start with the guest room. Many moving companies help disassemble beds and heavy items like pianos. Make sure all of your furniture will fit in your new house. If not, decide which one you want to sell and which to donate.

Take measurements of your doorways in the new house so you can know which furniture will fit and which needs to be sold. You don't want to get all your furniture across the country to find that it can't get in your house.

Start Packing Items You Won’t Need Until After the Move

It's never too early to start packing because there will always be something left to be packed at the end. However, minimize the inconvenience during the moving day by packing most of the items you will not need until your moving day.

Start with all the holiday decorations, an extra set of kitchen appliances and seasonal clothes. Then, label the boxes and mark them with different colors according to their room. This will help while moving and unpacking in the new house.

Pack all the fragile items separately and mark them, so the movers know which ones to handle with extra care.

Change Your Address

This is one of the things most people forget. You should change your address with the post office, bank(s), credit card company, brokerage, insurance company, and everyone who you do business with.

Change your address at least two weeks before the moving day. Whether you're planning to move permanently or temporarily, change your address at least two weeks beforehand so that you have enough time to receive your Move Validation Letter before the moving trucks arrive.

Choose A Moving Company

Moving companies will help you to plan your moving process with ease. Some provide full-service moving so you will not have to worry about anything. They will even take care of specialty items like your piano, gun safe or electronics.

Confirm your booking and ensure that they have the correct address, time and cost. Discuss the price beforehand, so you don't get any surprises later. Ensure that their customer care is supportive and responds well to your questions.

Inform Friends And Family

You might forget to give your new address to your family and friends during the whole moving process. You do not want to miss those sweet cards and letters from your friends. So make sure that you send them a message of your new address and inform them before moving to your new house.

Moving gets so overwhelming that these little things get missed. You can send them a message or throw a party to finish all your food before you move.

Conclusion

Long-distance moving is challenging but not impossible. Nowadays, you can hire professional movers to do it all for you. You need to calculate your moving expenses and gather all the essential documents you will need for the move.

You can look up online and learn ways to pack your items properly to avoid damage. Making a cross-country move is difficult, so selecting moving services that meet your needs and wants is crucial. It is best to have three moving quotes before selecting a moving company.

Before selecting a mover, look for their license and reviews online. This will help you to know whether they are a genuine and reputable company.
